COIN Coinbase
Cyclical trough masks a durable regulated crypto franchise; margins recover, but volatility keeps conviction low.
The story
Coinbase is the leading regulated US crypto exchange and custodian. Its moat is regulatory standing, institutional custody (ETF custody), and a USDC revenue share that brings in steadier interest income. It is a maturing but highly cyclical franchise: TTM revenue fell to 6.28B and operating margin turned to -18.4%, likely from crypto-asset marks and lower trading activity, not a broken business model. Through the cycle, derivatives, stablecoin, and subscription income should support solid but not peak margins.
I cut Y1 growth from 15% to 8% because TTM revenue is falling in a cyclical downturn. I nudged the target margin up to 24% (the cycle average of the last 4 years, including subscription/services mix) and cut beta to 1.7 and failure probability to 0.08. Those last moves reconcile with the market: my prior value of 51.51 at 172.28 implied the stock was mispriced by more than 200%, which is not credible for a heavily covered name with 3.6B of net cash. Horizon goes to 8 years because the custody, stablecoin, and derivatives platform extends the reinvestment runway.
