META Meta Platforms
Superb ad franchise, but the AI capex binge means the market is paying for flawless returns.
The story
Meta is a dominant ad-funded social network franchise (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads) with more than 3B daily users. Its data and scale moat has produced top-tier ad targeting and roughly 40% operating margins. It is now a mature cash machine betting heavily on a second act (Muse AI agents, smart glasses, wearables). That bet is pushing capex toward $90B a year and diluting reinvestment efficiency. Growth is still high for its size, but it is fading from about 20% toward GDP-plus as ads saturate, and rising AI depreciation caps further margin expansion.
Growth starts near the recent 18-20% pace but a notch lower, since ad share is already huge. It fades over a 12-year horizon, which a durable network-effect franchise with an AI reinvestment runway justifies. Margin settles at 40%, slightly below the 43% peak, because AI depreciation (capex is about 4x D&A) will flow through the income statement. Sales-to-capital is set above the current 0.83 on the view that the capex surge normalizes, but well below historical levels to reflect a more capital-intensive Meta.

Key risks
- AI capex (about $89B a year) fails to earn its cost of capital, and depreciation compresses margins below 40%
- Regulatory and antitrust action (EU DMA, FTC, youth-safety rules) restricts targeting or forces structural remedies
- Reality Labs and wearables losses persist while engagement shifts to AI-native competitors
Catalysts
- Muse agent monetization (business messaging, agentic commerce) shows up as a new revenue line
- Capex guidance plateaus, lifting free cash flow and signaling that reinvestment efficiency is recovering
