MPWR Monolithic Power Systems
Elite power-chip franchise riding AI, but ~20x sales prices in perfection well beyond sustainable economics.
The story
Monolithic Power is a fabless-light analog and power-management champion. Its proprietary BCD process and module integration give it share gains in AI data-center power (GPU and accelerator VRMs), automotive, and industrial. It combines a franchise-quality moat (process IP, design-in stickiness, customer diversification) with a long reinvestment runway, but it is still a cyclical semiconductor company exposed to concentrated AI capex and to competition from Infineon, Renesas and TI, plus in-house hyperscaler designs.
TTM growth is about 17% year over year, and AI power content supports 25% in the near term, fading toward nominal GDP over a long 15-year runway that a durable moat justifies. GAAP margin rises from 28.7% toward 35%, which is below MPWR's non-GAAP peak because stock-based compensation is a real cost. Sales-to-capital is set at 1.8 rather than the reported 0.93, since the reported figure is inflated by excess cash and a one-time capacity build. Beta is set slightly below the 1.3 anchor because the balance sheet holds net cash. Even on these generous drivers, value lands well under half of the $1,356 price. At about 20x sales the market is implying higher growth or margins than sustainable economics support, so I keep the gap rather than stretch the drivers further.

Key risks
- AI data-center capex slowdown or hyperscaler inventory digestion hitting the fastest-growing segment
- Share loss in GPU power stages to Infineon/Renesas or customer dual-sourcing (e.g., Nvidia socket shifts)
- Valuation compression: at ~20x sales, any growth deceleration de-rates sharply regardless of execution
Catalysts
- New foundry capacity deal and 48V/vertical power delivery wins expanding content per AI rack
- Automotive and enterprise data segments diversifying revenue and sustaining 20%+ growth
