ORCL Oracle Corporation
A software cash cow is leveraging up to bet on AI; the backlog is real, but so is the capital intensity.
The story
Oracle is turning from a mature database and applications franchise, with sticky enterprise customers and high margins, into a capital-heavy AI infrastructure provider. A huge contracted backlog (RPO) from OpenAI and other AI customers supports years of fast OCI revenue growth. That growth is being paid for with debt, with capex now above revenue, and it pulls margins toward lower hosting economics. The legacy moat is durable; the AI build-out is a leveraged bet on counterparties and on getting projects built on time, and the Project Jupiter force majeure shows that risk.
Growth is high up front because the backlog converts to revenue, then fades over a 10-year horizon; that horizon rests on the long runway from contracted AI demand plus the software franchise. Margins settle near 30% because GPU hosting is lower-margin than software, down from today's peak of 37%. Sales-to-capital rises from 0.43 toward 0.75 as capacity already built starts earning revenue. Beta and failure probability sit above the industry anchor to reflect about $98B of net debt and concentration on a few AI customers.

Key risks
- AI customer concentration (OpenAI) and counterparty ability to pay for contracted capacity
- Execution and power or construction delays at data centers (e.g., force majeure at Project Jupiter)
- Debt-funded capex with sustained negative free cash flow compressing returns and credit rating
Catalysts
- Converting RPO into recognized OCI revenue with improving infrastructure gross margins
- Capex peaking and free cash flow turning positive, easing leverage concerns
