STT State Street Corporation
Quality low-risk custody moat, but at 2x book the market already prices peak-ish returns.
The story
State Street is a scale custody and asset-servicing franchise (roughly $50T AUC/A) plus the SSGA asset manager, earning fee income that is sticky but price-compressed, along with rate-sensitive net interest income from operational deposits. The balance sheet is low credit risk: mostly high-quality securities and central bank cash, with little loan exposure. Its returns, though, depend on deposit betas and the rate cycle. Trailing ROE of 14.2% is helped by elevated rates and buyback-shrunk equity, while the market's ~2x book multiple already prices in sustained double-digit returns.
Normalized ROE of 13% sits below the trailing 14.2% to reflect NII mean reversion as rates fall and ongoing fee compression. It still assumes cost programs and Alpha front-to-back wins keep returns about 3 points above a ~10.2% cost of equity. Book grows only ~4% because most earnings go back to shareholders through buybacks and dividends. The custody moat and minimal credit risk justify a very low failure probability.

Key risks
- Rate cuts and deposit repricing compress net interest income, which is roughly 20%+ of revenue
- Fee-rate compression in custody and passive asset management (SSGA losing share to Vanguard and BlackRock)
- Operational, cyber, or regulatory events (GSIB capital surcharges, Basel III endgame) that raise required capital and lower ROE
Catalysts
- Execution on expense saves and positive operating leverage lifting ROE toward 15%+
- Equity market appreciation lifting AUC/A and fee revenue, plus large Alpha platform mandate wins
