T AT&T
Stable, overleveraged connectivity cash cow priced for decline; modest growth plus deleveraging supports upside.
The story
AT&T is a mature, capital-heavy US connectivity utility: a scale wireless franchise plus a fiber build-out replacing a shrinking legacy copper and business-wireline base. The moat is spectrum, network density and a three-player wireless oligopoly, but it is late-life: growth is low single digits, returns barely clear the cost of capital, and a 118B net debt load makes deleveraging and cash return the equity story. Satellite direct-to-device (SpaceX, AST) is a longer-dated threat to pricing power, not a near-term disruptor.
Drivers are mostly unchanged: TTM revenue grew about 1.3% to 127B, consistent with 2.5% near-term growth from fiber and wireless pricing, fading to 2%. I trimmed target margin slightly to 28% (from 28.5%) and sales-to-capital to 0.55 (from 0.58) because TTM margin slipped to 26.2% and capital efficiency printed 0.52, so the prior take looked a bit generous. These are small moves; beta stays near the telecom anchor, and failure risk stays low despite the leverage because cash flows are stable.

Key risks
- Wireless price war or cable MVNO share gains compress ARPU and margins
- Fiber and spectrum capex stays elevated, keeping FCF and deleveraging behind plan
- Satellite direct-to-device and fixed wireless erode pricing power over the long run
Catalysts
- Continued net debt reduction toward target leverage, enabling larger buybacks
- Fiber passings and convergence (fiber plus wireless bundles) lifting churn and margins as copper retirement cuts costs
