WST West Pharmaceutical Services
Growth is reaccelerating and the moat is durable, but $26B prices in well beyond plausible injectables growth.
The story
West makes elastomer stoppers, plungers and containment systems for injectable drugs. Its moat comes from being specified into regulatory filings, so switching costs are high. That moat is real, and the business is still growing, not yet mature. After the post-COVID destocking, TTM revenue of $3.33B is about 8.5% above the last fiscal year, driven by GLP-1 and biologics demand for high-value components (HVP) and by Annex 1 upgrades. Margins are still recovering from 19.6% as the new capacity fills.
I raised year-1 growth from 5.5% to 8% because TTM revenue shows real reacceleration, not the 2.1% 5-year CAGR. I extended the horizon from 8 to 10 years because injectables, especially GLP-1s, give the business a long reinvestment runway. Target margin goes to 23.5%, close to the 2022-23 levels but below the COVID peak, as the HVP mix improves. Sales-to-capital edges up to 1.1 because the heavy capex cycle is rolling off. Even with these changes, the model still says the stock is well overvalued; I could not justify a gap of more than 100% being closed by any further changes to the drivers.

Key risks
- GLP-1 volume falls short or moves to oral formulations, which need no elastomer components
- Contract-manufacturing margin pressure and slow absorption of new capacity
- A valuation of about 7.8x sales leaves no room for growth disappointments
Catalysts
- HVP mix and Annex 1 conversions lifting margins back toward 24%
- GLP-1 auto-injector and cartridge component volume ramp
